Cancer Lifeline designs our exercise and movement classes to be gentle and appropriate for patients during and after treatment, as well as for caregivers, family, friends and co-workers at any point in the cancer journey. Facilitators adapt movements to allow participation by people with physical limitations during and after cancer treatment.
Cancer Lifeline’s Medical Advisory Committee reviews and approves all exercise offerings and identifies exercise classes for which physician approval is necessary for patients in treatment within the last year. When physician release is needed, we work with patients and their physicians to facilitate this process.
Classes include:
- Belly Dancing: Practicing the ancient art of belly dancing stretches and tones the whole body.
- Feldenkrais®: This approach to gentle movement and guided awareness helps participants learn to move in ways that reduce stress and pain.
- Lebed Method, Focus on Healing: This is a gentle and fun approach to aerobic, strength training and stretching exercise, appropriate during or after treatment. It is also appropriate exercise for people with lymphedema or who are at risk for it. A version tailored for men is called “Getting Ready for Golf.”
- Qigong: This approach to gentle movement and visualization increases focus, energy and well-being.
- Stretch & Strength: This class helps participants build muscular endurance and flexibility at their own pace.
- Gentle Yoga: These classes include easy stretches, breathing, postures and guided meditation.
