The transformation of a grocery store into the Dorothy S. O’Brien Center included the creation of three roof-top decks plus a street level garden,
each one a unique healing garden. The University of Washington School of Landscape Architecture created these gardens as its Student Studio Design/Build project in 2000.
The Earth/Sky Garden is partly open to the sky and lovely views, and partly sheltered by an arbor. Sliding copper-clad doors create areas for multiple uses.

The Celebration Garden is a place for conviviality. It is completely open to the sun and sky and populated with a wide variety of colorful plants.

The Reflection Garden is a place for contemplation and meditation. Quiet shadows mix with the rich greens of shade-loving plants, while a small fountain bubbles across rocks and moss.

The Mark Lenz Garden is a lovely ground-floor garden created by Mark’s family and friends. It includes a sculpture composed of parts from his favorite car. The garden is the most recent addition to the Dorothy O’Brien Center.
