This year’s event was all about highlighting Cancer Lifeline and our mission of optimizing the quality of life for all people living with cancer. Nearly everyone is touched by cancer in some way, and our emcee, Nate Miles, was no exception. He brought a very real and uplifting presence to the overall event, managing to bring out the humor and highlight positive outlooks on the journey through cancer.

This year’s Luncheon also featured two individuals who shared their personal journey, and what Cancer Lifeline programs helped them through a difficult time. Julie Hillers talked about her first exposure with cancer while drying her hair and finding an abnormal puckering. Julie found support with the Belly Dancing class as well as the Metastatic Support Group at Cancer Lifeline. She recently joined the board in order to give back something back to the organization from which she has found so much encouragement.

Jeffrey Brusseau gave an often unheard of story from the well-spouse point-of-view. Jeffrey gave us an insight into his wife’s long battle with cancer and how it affected their entire family. Both Julie and Jeffrey emphasized how lucky they were and how pivotal it was for them to have a strong support group of friends, family and community.

The Lifeline is how the organization first began. This year we played a sample “lifeline call” to give attendees an idea of what it would be like to call in and be supported by the call line.
This year’s ask was given by a 28-year-old named My Tam Nguyen who took control of her situation by using social media, sharing with her network of family and friends the struggles and successes of her journey with Lymphoma. Her confident, uplifting spirit showed everyone what cancer looks like, and how it feels to be cancer-free.
